Walmart Rewards World Mastercard eligibility criteria

To be eligible for a Walmart Rewards World Mastercard as a new applicant, you must have a household income of $100,000 or more. Existing Rewards Mastercard cardholders can upgrade to a World card if they have spent $15,000 or more on their Rewards Mastercard in the previous 12 months.

What people have to say about this card

In past years, many have complained about the mediocre earning rates of the World card. In this Reddit/PersonalFinanceCanada thread, users justlikeyouimagined and quiet wolf comment on the card being a “mediocre choice,” with one recommending the Tangerine Cash Back Card instead. However, effective June 27, 2024, Walmart has increased the earning rates on both of its Rewards Mastercards, making it more competitive for a no annual fee credit card.

One big drawback is the lack of redemption options. You can only redeem Walmart Reward Dollars against Walmart purchases. There are no options to redeem your earnings as a statement credit, or towards travel, such as airfare or hotel rooms.

It’s easy to see why the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card is one of the most popular no annual fee credit cards in Canada. Cardholders earn an unlimited 2% cash back on two spending categories of their choice. (Options include Grocery, Gas, Restaurant, Drug Store, and Recurring Bill Payments). Not only do you get to choose your rewards categories, but your earnings can be automatically deposited into your Tangerine savings account for maximum flexibility.

The Walmart Rewards World Mastercard offers a higher earning rate on many Walmart purchases, but its rewards hold no value outside of Walmart. If you’re looking for flexible rewards, the Tangerine Money-Back Card is the better option of the two.

Walmart Rewards World Mastercard vs. Walmart Rewards Mastercard

If you meet the eligibility criteria, the Walmart Rewards World Mastercard has more to offer than the standard Walmart Rewards Card. While the earning rates have recently been enhanced for both cards, you’ll earn more with the World card when shopping at Walmart.ca (3% vs. 1.25%), while benefiting from free extended warranty protection, which can be a valuable perk.

Is the Walmart Rewards World Mastercard worth it?

The Walmart Rewards World Mastercard can be worth owning as a secondary credit card, providing you shop regularly in-store and online at Walmart. The card has no annual fee, you can earn up to 5% on Walmart purchases, and it comes with purchase assurance and extended warranty protection. However, we recommend keeping a more flexible rewards card as your primary credit card, due to its lack of insurance coverage and redemption options outside of Walmart. With limited earnings and redemption potential outside of Walmart and a lack of additional benefits, including insurance, the card comes up short against the best no annual fee credit cards
